This book tells the story of women’s involvement in the coal industry from the days when they were used as slave labour to the twentieth century.
Countless books have been written about miners and mining, their appalling working conditions, their struggles with government and capitalists, their development from bonded slaves to law makers and legislators. Very little has been written from a woman’s viewpoint but, in parts of Scotland, until the middle of the nineteenth century women and children worked underground with their husbands, brothers and fathers.
In addition, throughout the whole history of mining, women have had to deal with the social, economic and health problems that were their share of an industry that powered the Industrial Revolution and brought untold wealth to the country.
Their contribution, as in so many areas of history, has been overlooked. That is hardly surprising because like most aspects of women’s lives it has remained for centuries unwritten. This book is a small attempt to set the record straight.

THANK YOU for doing the research and writing this book! I have been doing a lot of my family history and have wondered why many of my ancestors were working in the mines at such young ages and the conditions they must have suffered. It was much worse than I could have imagined.Product details

SAIR SAIR WARK eBook LILLIAN KING Reviews
This book treats a very under appreciated area of history--women's role in the heavy industrial proletariat, particularly the Scottish mines--with unusual care to the historical context. It combines first person accounts with historical analysis in an enlightening fashion. I highly recommend it.
